In the Catholic Church, First Communion is a major milestone for young children, usually aged around 7 or 8. It marks the first time that a baptized person receives the Eucharist– bread and wine representing the body and blood of Christ. Another equally momentous occasion is Confirmation: a sacrament that completes Baptism. Through this ceremony, the recipient’s soul becomes one with the Holy Spirit, as they are called to be a witness to Christ and their faith is strengthened. Confirmation doesn’t take place at one universal age, but primarily, the recipients range from tweens to teens.

For such monumental occasions in the lives of young Catholics, it’s vital that they dress the part. Firstly, it’s best to speak with a child’s particular parish to understand the proper dress code within their church. The most traditional colors to be worn for both Communion and Confirmation are white, ivory, and navy, as all colors symbolize purity and reverence. However, with these events falling sometime between April and May, you may be able to appeal to trendy spring fashion with more modern takes on colors and patterns.

For young boys receiving Communion and Confirmation, in an effort to look both sharp and modest, suits are the most popular choice. They may get fitted for a tuxedo – single or double-breasted – or purchase a five-piece suit all in one go, including a dress shirt, vest, coat, tie, and trousers. For a simpler route, wearing a neat, full-sleeve button-down shirt and slacks can be just as effective.

While many male recipients of Communion and Confirmation stick to the typical colors of white, beige, or dark blue for their suits, there are many options to personalize the attire. For Communion, boys may add a touch of color with a pastel tie or pocket square. For Confirmation, red ties are common to represent the Holy Spirit in an elegant manner. Lastly, be sure to swap out sneakers for clean dress shoes with dark socks, and you’ll be good to go.

When girls receive Communion, there is a general rule of thumb that they wear a modest white dress at a respectful length, below the knee or calf. The dress’ style is usually simple with an appropriate neckline, but depending on preference, some have chosen more intricate dresses with lace, embroidery, or ruffles. While white and ivory are the most traditional color choices, a church may allow pastel colors to add some personality while keeping the air of sophistication. Commonly, girls top the look off with a white veil or flower crown, and can opt to accessorize with white gloves, tights, and light-colored closed-toe shoes.

As for Confirmation, girls have a bit more flexibility on what attire is acceptable. So long as the outfit remains age-appropriate, girls may choose alternatives to a dress, such as a sophisticated jumpsuit or a two-piece outfit made up of a refined blouse and skirt or trousers. Color possibilities may now expand to springtime shades such as pink, pale green, light blue, or even an uncomplicated floral pattern if the church allows it. Whether for Communion or Confirmation, adding some simple, understated jewelry is a fantastic way to shine on your special day.
