As Memorial Day Weekend approaches, New Yorkers gear up for Fleet Week—a beloved tradition that brings the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard to the city’s shores. Since 1984, Fleet Week has thrilled spectators with ships, ceremonies, and patriotism, offering a unique chance to honor our service members while enjoying fun-filled, family-friendly events.

Fleet Week kicks off with the breathtaking Parade of Ships on Wednesday morning, May 21. Typically starting around 7:30am, the ships begin sailing under the Verrazzano-NarrowsBridge and proceed up the Hudson River. Spectators can catch the best views from Staten Island’s Fort Wadsworth or Manhattan’s Battery Park. The procession includes active Navy destroyers, Coast Guard cutters, and tall ships, all sailing in perfect formation. It’s a powerful start to a weekend that blends maritime heritage with military pride.

Once the ships dock, visitors can step aboard for free public ship tours from Thursday, May 22 through Tuesday, May 27. Ships will be berthed along Staten Island’s Homeport Pier and at Manhattan’s Pier 88 and Pier 86. Guests can explore the decks, interact with sailors and marines, and learn about life at sea through demonstrations and exhibits. It’s an unforgettable experience for families, history buffs, and anyone curious about the Navy’s operations.

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, docked on Pier 86 in Manhattan, hosts a week-long celebration filled with exciting activities. From May 22 to May 27, expect military band performances, flight deck demonstrations, and meet-and-greets with service members. The museum will also feature special exhibits honoring fallen heroes and showcasing naval innovation. Admission is required, but veterans and active-duty military often receive discounts or free entry. This setting—a former aircraft carrier—is the perfect place to deepen your appreciation for America’s armed forces.

For an unforgettable night out, Single and the City’s Fleet Week Bash returns on Friday, May 23, at The Dean– an especially trendy NYC venue. This social mixer attracts local civilians and uniformed personnel for a night of dancing, drinks, and mingling. Whether you're looking to meet new people or just enjoy the nightlife, the Fleet Week Bash is a spirited way to salute our troops.

On Memorial Day itself, Monday, May 26, join fellow New Yorkers for a solemn tribute at the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in Riverside Park. The ceremony begins at 10am and includes readings, wreath-laying, and performances by military bands and honor guards. It’s a moving reminder of the lives lost in service to the country and a poignant way to conclude Fleet Week on a note of gratitude and reflection.

Lastly, for an experience of touching reflection wrapped in local pride, don’t forget to attend the iconic Staten Island Memorial Day Parade, also set on May 26th. Taking place along Forest Avenue, the parade features veterans, school bands, civic organizations, and first responders in a heartfelt procession. As flags wave and drums echo through the streets, spectators are reminded of the sacrifices made by countless soldiers in uniform.

As Memorial Day concludes, let us come together to honor the past and embrace the spirit of unity, service, and sacrifice that makes this weekend so meaningful.
